The Experience
The exterior gives off a worn, no-frills feel, but sometimes the most authentic bakeries do. Inside, shelves are stocked with a variety of grocery products including:
Fresh baked bread
Imported candies
Coffee and tea
Spices
Refrigerated cheeses and yogurt
Service during this visit felt minimal, with limited interaction upon entering. While not overly attentive, the space allows you to browse at your own pace.
What We Picked Up
🥬 Spinach Pie (Fatayer bi Sabanekh)
A large, savory spinach pastry — a staple in Palestinian baking. Best enjoyed warm, with the soft dough and tangy filling shining through.
🍯 Cream-Filled Baklava
Three pieces of cream-filled baklava satisfied the original craving. Sweet, rich, and layered — though the dessert selection was somewhat limited during this particular visit.
The bright orange kanafeh looked especially tempting and is worth exploring on a future stop.
What to Try Next Time
🥩 Sfiha (Levantine-style meat pie with ground beef and tomatoes)
🧀 Manakeesh with zaatar and cheese
🍊 Kanafeh
🥟 Fried snacks like kibbeh
With a small dine-in area available, this could be a good spot to enjoy warm savory items fresh out of the oven.
Neighborhood Competition
Located near Cedar Bakery, Zeyad faces strong competition in the Middle Eastern bakery category. Houston has no shortage of excellent Levantine bakeries, so consistency and atmosphere play an important role in repeat visits.
Review
Sara I. (Feb 20, 2018):
“A shabby and rundown strip on Richmond Ave… Zeyad Bakery & Sweets offers up some savory and sweet Palestinian baked goods.I picked up a large spinach pie and three pieces of baklava filled with cream. The bakery didn't have a large selection of desserts at the time I came in.I'd say this bakery is a good place to order a large quantity of desserts for a party. The unkempt bakery and silent service was awkward. But I recommend picking up dessert from here if you're curious to try something new.”
Overall Impression
Zeyad Bakery & Sweets delivers traditional Palestinian baked goods in a simple, no-frills setting. While the atmosphere and service may feel understated, the bakery offers authentic flavors for those seeking Middle Eastern desserts and savory pies in Houston.
It may not be the most polished bakery experience in the city, but it’s worth a visit if you’re curious about Levantine sweets — especially for party-sized dessert orders or a quick baklava stop.
