Sara's review, May 29, 2010. Phoenicia Specialty Foods, Westchase, Houston, TX.

There's nothing like an ethnic specialty food market! These are the types of markets where you find hidden food treasures. Being as I am, very much into cooking, I feel as if this is the one stop shop place for my foodie menu. I can find all sorts of unique items in the produce, dry goods, and meats section. As soon as you enter, take a left. Once you've done that look above you! There's a marvelous conveyor belt churning up puffy, fresh, pita breads. Pick up any of the packages of breads, and you will notice the steam against the bag, and how the bread just feels in your hands. Freshness at its finest! Whenever I drop by to Phoenicia, I take quite some time venturing around the very tall aisles filled with items. It's even more wonderful that this market has a section with a cafe and bakery. There's nothing like chowing down on a roasted chicken wrap with garlic sauce, and moving along with your cart at the same time. Multi tasking at its finest. They have an area filled with tables where you can sit down as well. The dessert items in the bakery are just eye pleasing, as well as delicious. Try the Kanafeh, which is a sweet cheese dessert, topped with semolina (halva) layered on top. The Baklavas are great here as well. I'm kinda tired of those, but this place makes some juicy and filling Baklavas. For a savory baked treat, I suggest trying the Spanakopita. Honestly, I squeal in delight when I come across an item that I usually do not find anywhere else! It also comes to mind that I can use these items to create delicious concoctions. Check out Phoenicia. You'll never want to leave!
