Voodoo Doughnut – Quirky Classics with Mixed Execution in the Washington Corridor

Voodoo Doughnut brings its signature pink flair and eccentric personality to Houston—but the experience doesn’t quite match the magic of its flagship locations in Portland or Austin. While the shop is undeniably fun, colorful, and great for hosting out-of-town visitors, the freshness and texture of the doughnuts can be inconsistent compared to their busier, higher-volume counterparts.

Houston is full of standout donut shops, many of which offer simple, fresh, reliable classics. Voodoo leans heavily into novelty toppings and funky combinations—sometimes fun, sometimes too over the top. Yet in the middle of that theatrical menu, the simplest donuts end up being the unexpected stars.

What to Expect

  • Playful, quirky donut names and bright pink-themed décor

  • Less foot traffic = less frequent fresh batches

  • Best items tend to be the classic, uncomplicated donuts

  • Good hot coffee to pair with your picks

Review

Sara I. (Mar 21, 2020):

“The doughnuts here aren’t as fresh as the Austin location. They’re not churning through batches the way they do in PDX or ATX, so things get a bit stale. The storefront lacks the charm of the original shops too. Houston has so many great donut spots—and this one just isn’t it for me.

I do enjoy the quirky pink aesthetic and their fun, funky donut names. Definitely a cute place to take visitors. But many toppings are overkill; more hype than substance. The jelly donut was the standout—full of raspberry jelly with a crisp, thick shell. The plain cake donut was another favorite: nutmeg-kissed, dense, not too sweet. The buttermilk bar was good as well. Basically, the simpler the flavor, the better it tasted.

Voodoo is supposed to be magically delicious, but things are getting stale—literally. On the bright side, the coffee is good, warm, local, and fresh. Ask for milk and pair it with your fave donut.

Overall? Probably won’t be back anytime soon.”
