Flower Child – Fresh, West Coast Spirit with Portions That Need Reviving

Flower Child has long been admired for bringing a vibrant, West Coast–inspired, health-forward dining experience to Houston. With its colorful bowls, sustainable ingredients, vegetarian-friendly menu, and sunny ambiance, it quickly became a favorite for those craving fresh, wholesome meals. But over the years, the experience has shifted.

Where Flower Child once delivered generous portions layered with bold flavors, crisp vegetables, and nourishing grains, recent visits reveal smaller servings and a noticeable decrease in toppings—turning bowls that once felt abundant into meals that leave diners wanting more.

Still, the menu retains its charm: forbidden rice bowls, ancient grain creations, sweet potato accents, nutritious greens, and a highly flexible lineup of vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options. The atmosphere remains bright, breezy, and uplifting, perfectly suited for a casual lunch, post-gym bite, or a feel-good dinner.

With strong potential and a loyal customer base, Flower Child continues to be a beloved spot—one that could easily return to greatness with a revival of the generous, well-balanced portions it once offered.

Highlights:

  • Vibrant, West Coast–inspired healthy bowls

  • Vegan-, vegetarian-, and gluten-free–friendly

  • Fresh ingredients, colorful presentation

  • Spacious seating & warm ambiance

  • Great variety: bowls, salads, wraps, plates, teas & more

“Portions have drastically decreased at this restaurant... I ordered the mother earth bowl and only had 2 pieces of sweet potato in the bowl. I remember eating this specific item a few years ago and having more volume in the meal. They used to add more avocado and sweet potato.

Today, all I had was a measly 1 sliver of avocado and 2 chunks of sweet potato. How does anyone get full from that? Especially when it's a vegan meal to begin with... What happened Flower Child?

This restaurant was absurdly busy today, I'm assuming they're cutting corners and just not providing great meals as they used to. Everyone else enjoyed their food today; but they all agreed that it was just an ‘okay’ experience. Flower Child should consider opening up more locations. Maybe that could help.. I don't know.

All I can say is that meals should be provided with ample substance and not appear lackluster. Overpriced and it's mostly a self-serving restaurant. Fetch your own drinks and cutlery. Totally left feeling hungry.”

“I absolutely adore the food and the environment at Flower Child. Everything here is made fresh with a kick and snap. The menu is totally vegan friendly with a strong emphasis on using local and sustainable ingredients. There are a few meat selections that you can choose from, such as chicken, salmon, and steak. Tofu is a nice addition as well if you're into non-based meat. Thankfully, they have zero pork items here which makes me feel very comfortable.

I absolutely adore the menu; it has a strong West Coast influence and Houston was in dire need of a concept like this. It's the kind of grub that makes my belly happy and leaves me floating on cloud nine.

We visited on a cloudy Sunday afternoon, and to our surprise, the tiny line went quick and all the staff were kind and helpful. Our food didn't take long to make and was served warm and fresh.

I ordered the forbidden rice bowl with salmon as my choice of protein. I loved the savoury Asian inspired flavors that contained black pearl rice and many crisp vegetables. The mother earth is another item that I really liked. The ancient grains went very well with the sweet potatoes that were smothered in a red pepper miso vinaigrette. The broccoli pesto was vividly green and paired nicely with the leafy greens and avocado. All in all, every item danced well together in a beautiful and colorful layout.

Flower Child has salads, plates, bowls and wraps to choose from. Their drinks look great as well. I can imagine revisiting during the cooler season and wrapping around some hot tea and a warm bowl. Welcome to the city of Houston, Flower Child! I look forward to meeting you again. Until next time.”
