A long-loved Texas favorite, Amy’s Ice Creams has always been known for quirky culture and creative mix-ins—but this Upper Kirby visit reflects a shift that regulars are beginning to notice. With growing competition from newer, more artisanal ice cream shops in the area, this classic spot is struggling to keep its scoops consistent.
What to Order
(Based on what still tends to hold up across visits)
Mexican Vanilla Ice Cream – Their signature, nostalgic flavor.
Chocolate Ice Cream – Safe, classic, and less prone to texture issues.
Hot Fudge Sundae – Only if the fudge is fresh and thick.
Review
Sara I. (Apr 4, 2019):
“No longer a fan of this popular ice cream spot. I was just here two nights ago and the line was out the door. The two young dudes slingin' ice cream had no clue what they were doing.
All of the flavor samples were melty and non-existent in taste. Asked for hot fudge on top and it pooled its way throughout the ice cream—turned into soup. The slivered almonds were mixed into the ice cream when they were meant as a topping. Whipped cream just sat there in motion. Nothing at all tasted right. I basically ate a cup of fluffy clouds.
The most recent reviews are feelin' the same way. With the latest and most competing ice cream shops nearby… Amy's gotta get a moovin' on. Atmosphere is sinking like a sad cup of ice cream.”
