Afandim Restaurant – Authentic Uyghur Cuisine in Houston’s Chinatown [Permanently Closed]

Tucked inside Houston’s bustling Chinatown on Bellaire Boulevard, Afandim Restaurant introduces diners to the bold and comforting flavors of Uyghur cuisine — a unique culinary blend influenced by Central Asian, Chinese, and Mediterranean traditions.

If you’re unfamiliar with Uyghur food, expect hand-pulled noodles, lamb kebabs, hearty rice dishes, and freshly baked breads, often seasoned with warm spices and balanced flavors — not overly salty or spicy.

Why You’ll Love It

  • Authentic Uyghur cuisine

  • Handmade noodle dishes

  • Halal-friendly menu

  • Warm and welcoming service

  • Unique flavors not commonly found in Houston

The Experience

We visited on a Saturday afternoon with a friend of Uyghur background who guided us through the menu — always the best way to experience a new cuisine.

Service was warm and welcoming, and we were eager to try a variety of dishes. However, many items had already sold out by mid-afternoon — something to keep in mind when planning your visit.

What We Tried

🍜 Handmade Noodles with Beef

The standout dish of the afternoon.

  • Tender, chewy hand-pulled noodles

  • Strips of beef

  • Bell peppers and onions

  • Vibrant and colorful presentation

Comforting, hearty, and full of texture — this was easily my favorite.

🥦 Broccoli with Garlic

Simple and fresh. A nice, clean vegetable side to balance the heavier dishes.

🍢 Lamb Kebabs

While flavorful, the texture leaned tough and chewy, with some pieces containing noticeable fat. Not my personal favorite on this visit.

🍵 Tea

The tea was unfortunately watered down and lacked depth.

What to Know Before You Go

  • Visit earlier in the day to avoid sold-out items.

  • Popular rice and bread dishes are worth trying on a return visit.

  • Expect hearty, balanced flavors that aren’t overwhelmingly salty or spicy.
