The Dining Experience

Dining here on a chilly night naturally called for hot ramen bowls around the table. While ramen typically leans wheat-based and pork-heavy — not always my personal preference — I opted for something lighter: the cold ramen noodle salad.

The menu offers plenty of variety beyond traditional tonkotsu-style ramen. From mini rice bowls to poke and stir-fried dishes, there are multiple ways to build a meal depending on your dietary preferences.

What We Ordered

🍗 Fried Chicken (Ponzu Flavor) – Appetizer Standout

The fried chicken was easily the highlight of the night — crispy, flavorful, and well-executed. The ponzu variation added a citrusy brightness that balanced the richness of the fry.

Best bite of the evening.

🥗 Cold Ramen Noodle Salad

Instead of hot broth-based ramen, I chose the cold ramen salad for a refreshing option. The noodles were coated in a sesame-forward sauce that delivered a strong sesame oil flavor. For my palate, it leaned slightly bitter.

After mixing in the accompanying sauce, the overall profile became noticeably saltier. While not inedible, it wasn’t particularly memorable either.

I ended up finishing about half the bowl.

Ingredient Sensitivity Note

Those who are sensitive to ingredients such as MSG or sodium-heavy dishes may want to inquire about preparation methods before ordering. Japanese ramen and izakaya dishes can often lean rich and seasoning-forward.

If you have dietary sensitivities, it’s always wise to ask your server for clarification.

Review

Sara I. (Oct 31, 2018):

“I'm not the biggest fan of ramen… I try to stay away from it. I prefer rice noodles over wheat-based noodles.I dined here with a group of friends on a chilly night. Everyone ordered hot ramen, and I decided to get the cold ramen noodle salad for something refreshing. The fried chicken — specifically the ponzu flavor — was my favorite appetizer. The cold ramen had a strong sesame oil taste, which made the meal bitter. After mixing in the sauce, it just became saltier. I ate about half.Doubt I'll be visiting back after the experience. If you're sensitive to certain ingredients, I'd suggest looking over this place carefully.”

Overall Impression

Ramen Bar Ichi offers a broad menu of Japanese comfort food in Westchase, with appetizers like the ponzu fried chicken standing out positively. The ramen selection and izakaya offerings provide variety for group dining.

However, if you’re not typically a ramen enthusiast or are sensitive to strong seasoning, sesame oil, or sodium-heavy dishes, this may not be your ideal spot.

For those who enjoy bold, savory ramen and casual Japanese fare in Houston’s Westchase district, it may still be worth exploring.
