What We Ordered
🥪 Wicked Philly Cheesesteak
The “Wicked Philly” was marketed as a spicy, meat-loaded sandwich featuring hot chili oil peppers — bold in description and promising in theory.
In execution, however, the sandwich fell short of expectations. The portion of meat was noticeably light, especially for a cheesesteak at its price point. The advertised chili oil peppers were not apparent, and caramelized onions were minimal at best.
For a sandwich described as hearty and spice-forward, it lacked the fullness and flavor depth anticipated.
Menu Variety
Pappa Geno’s offers several cheesesteak variations, along with classic sides like fries and onion rings — appealing to those looking for indulgent, fried comfort food late at night.
If you’re specifically craving greasy, post-midnight grub, the menu leans into that category.

Review
Sara I. (Aug 11, 2018):
“I tried out Papa Geno's late last night. This newly opened sandwich business is tucked in a dimly lit plaza… within the trenches of Montrose. It's quite clean and bright inside. But I had an awful experience.Ordered the wicked philly, thinking it'd be spicy and loaded with meat. The Philly cheesesteak barely had any meat… and to our surprise… no peppers. This particular item on the menu boasted of a sandwich loaded with hot chili oil peppers. We didn't spot any peppers… and barely any caramelized onions.Needless to say I won't be back… Would suggest going elsewhere. You'd be better off going to Katz or even House of Pies if you wanna eat late night grub.”
Overall Impression
Pappa Geno’s benefits from a convenient Montrose location and a clean, inviting interior. However, based on this visit, the execution of the featured cheesesteak did not align with its description — particularly in portion size and promised ingredients.
With strong competition in Houston’s late-night dining scene, especially in Montrose, consistency and value are key. For those seeking a fully loaded, generously portioned Philly cheesesteak, it may be worth exploring alternative options nearby.
