Sara I. (Jan 20, 2019):

“They have cats upon the premises! That's the main reason I dined in here a couple of days ago. Jk. I had dinner here a few nights ago with a good friend. Both of the cats belong to the owners and normally just patrol outside—not inside.

This was my first time at Marini's, though my friend Mike had been here before. The interior is warm and glowing, with plenty of seating. There’s a historical appeal inside Marini’s, and I'm surprised it took me so long to visit.

On a crisp and chilly night, empanadas were just the right items to nosh on. The menu is large and thoroughly categorized—there’s truly an empanada for everyone. I ordered two savory empanadas and one dessert: the chicken poblana (mole), the beef picadillo (beef gaucho), and the Elvis melbis for dessert (peanut butter, banana, dulce de leche).

Everything is made fresh to order, and the taste reflects the quality. Service was prompt and attentive. All three empanadas were delicious—warm, crispy, freshly fried. I couldn’t finish them all and took a few bites to-go. The chicken mole was deep, earthy, and had a unique savory chocolate flavor. My favorite was the beef picadillo—juicy and perfect with the green chili sauce. When it comes to empanadas, I prefer fried over baked, and these were executed beautifully.

The dessert empanada was rich and sweet—the dulce de leche paired nicely with the banana and peanut butter, though I’ll try another flavor next time. With so many options, I look forward to exploring more of the menu. Marini’s also serves soups, salads, and more. Since it carries an Argentinian flair, you’ll find iced yerba mate by the counter. It was watered down in flavor, but still refreshing.

Chill atmosphere and warm food for the soul. Try the Original Marini’s for yourself—it's a Houston classic.

PS – I might just revisit to hang out with the cats.”
