The Oceanaire Seafood Room – A Classic Galleria Spot with a Mixed HRW Experience

The Oceanaire Seafood Room is a long-standing Galleria favorite—known for its sleek, submarine-inspired design, large corner windows overlooking bustling streets, and over two decades of reputation as a premier seafood destination. It’s the kind of restaurant many Houstonians keep on their “must-visit” list. During Houston Restaurant Weeks, expectations run especially high, but this particular visit offered a mix of highs and lows.

While the ambiance and several dishes impressed, service inconsistencies impacted the overall experience. Still, the restaurant’s strengths—fresh sushi, flavorful appetizers, and a stellar key lime pie—hint at its potential when firing on all cylinders. With such an iconic Houston presence, a return visit to explore the regular menu feels worthwhile.

Highlights & Notes:

  • Iconic Galleria location with a submarine-inspired aesthetic

  • Fresh, flavorful sushi & excellent smoked salmon starter

  • Tasty shrimp fried rice, though served lukewarm due to service delays

  • Key lime pie: tart, refreshing, and one of the best

  • Service during HRW was inattentive and lacked communication

  • Regular menu appears strong—worth revisiting outside HRW

“3 stars experience during Houston Restaurant Weeks. Boy, were we all excited to dine in at this restaurant. It is a Houston classic!

From the submarine looking terrain, to the large windows at the corner facing one of the busiest streets in Houston. It's the Galleria after all, and it’s one of the most popular spots to visit. This restaurant has been around for over 20 years, and for some of us, it was our very first time.

I do believe they could have had better choices in regards to their food menu with HRW. This is all in regards to food allergies, mind you. So that’s something we take seriously. But we came on a mission! To dine in on HRW style menu which benefits the local Houston Food Bank.

Their regular menu looks great and appealing. We may revisit and try items from their everyday menu. We did try their sushi and we loved it. The sushi was fresh and flavorful. It retained its shape well and came with a burst of flavor. My second favorite was the smoked salmon. It was chunky, held its shape and it had a great umami yet mellow flavor as well. Paired well with the bold marinated onions, capers, relish and crispy crackers.

I did like the shrimp fried rice, it was flavorful and well seasoned — however it was quite lukewarm by the time it reached our table. Reason being? They forgot to deliver our order to the table. We waited for ages after being served appetizers. So much time passed by that I had to flag down a waiter from far away, just to get his notice and ask him what happened to our food?

He quickly went in, back of the house and grabbed our meals. So basically our meals were sitting BOH, chillin and getting cold. No apologies or ‘I'm sorry for the delay in your food.’ Instead he mentioned, ‘Oh, we're packed and having a busy day here.’ Definitely didn't seem like it, with most of the room being empty. Just one day before, my entire office dined in here for HRW. What must have happened then? Not enough employees to accommodate diners needs. Lack of customer service was the downfall of our experience dining here at the Oceanaire.

Dessert was good. It was ordered from their regular menu as it’s not provided with HRW. We opted for the key lime pie and it was definitely one of the better ones we've all had. Super tart, sweet and refreshing. Perfect on the palate after consuming mellow oceanic foods.

Again, we all enjoyed our food. Totally look forward to revisiting and trying items from their regular menu. This is a nice spot to bring out-of-town guests. They have many non-seafood items as well for those that aren't much into seafood. We're just hoping for warmer and keen attentive service next time around for such a posh and elaborate spot such as this. Until next time!”
